About this deal

This is such a special place to visit on our D Day landings tour and a fitting way to commemorate the role of animals, not only in Normandy, but throughout the Second World War Only 100 of the 2,400 tons of supplies scheduled to be landed on D-Day were landed. [101] An accurate figure for casualties incurred by V Corps at Omaha on 6 June is not known; sources vary between 5,000 and over 6,000 killed, wounded, and missing, [102] [103] with the heaviest losses incurred by the infantry, tanks and engineers in the first landings. [100] Only five tanks of the 741st Tank Battalion were ready for action the next day. [104] The German 352nd division suffered 1,200 killed, wounded and missing; about 20% of its strength. [97] Its deployment at the beach caused such problems that Lieutenant General Omar Bradley, commander of the U.S. First Army, at one stage considered evacuating Omaha, [105] while Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery considered the possibility of diverting V Corps forces through Gold. [106] Aftermath [ edit ] 2nd Infantry Division troops and equipment going up the bluff via the E-1 draw on D+1, June 7. They are going past WN-65 that defended the route up the Ruquet Valley to Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer. D-Day Dog has just been voted (April 2022) favourite children’s audiobook by Calibre Audio, the national charity that provides a completely free for life audiobook service to everyone with a disability that makes reading print difficult or impossible, thank you to all who listened to my book and Rachel Reay for narrating.

Omaha Beach was one of five beach landing sectors of the amphibious assault component of Operation Overlord during the Second World War. Allied planners were concerned about a reef and reported shoals, which required a high tide landing at 0745, later than the other D-Day beaches. As it developed, the ‘‘shoals’’ were accumulated banks of seaweed and probably would have posed little problem to most landing craft.

Shortly after the bombardment began, the German 916th Grenadiers reported their positions to be under particularly intense fire, with the position at WN-60 very badly hit. Although the Rangers at Pointe-du-Hoc were greatly assisted in their assault of the cliffs by the Satterlee and Talybont, elsewhere the air and naval bombardment was not so effective, and the German beach defenses and supporting artillery remained largely intact. [32] As the preparations for D-Day got underway the War Office’s request for civilian canine recruits to join-up proved well timed. By 1944 dogs were already distinguishing themselves in battle overseas. Bing passed his initial training with flying colours. Alongside his fellow graduates, Monty, Flash and Rob, Bing became a fully qualified patrol dog but next he had to gain his ‘wings’. When General Omar Bradley expressed concern about Omaha Beach in January, a Royal Engineers team of Captain Logan Scott-Bowden and Sergeant Bruce Ogden-Smith showed him a sample of sand from the beach. They had swum ashore in Normandy from midget submarines over thirty times, to obtain sand samples to see whether the beaches would support tanks. Scott-Bowden said to him "Sir, I hope you don't mind me saying it, but this beach is a very formidable proposition indeed and there are bound to be tremendous casualties." Bradley put his hand on Scott-Bowden's shoulder and replied, "I know, my boy. I know." [18] Plan [ edit ] Official history map showing the V Corps objectives for D-Day I was so happy the D-Day Dog was voted the overall winner at the 2020 FCBG Children’s Book Awards which is run by the wonderful Federation of Children’s Book Groups. The fact that over 100,000 children nominate, longlist, shortlist and choose the winners makes it all the more brilliant and satisfying for me. Thank you 100,000 times over.

By September the D-Day dogs were heading home and, for the next six-months Bing, Monty and Rob would call the quarantine kennels in Cheshire their home. The ‘para dogs’, of the 13th Parachute Battalion Sniper Recce Platoon, would accompany the Airborne Divisions – the first to land in occupied France on D-Day. Brian left home to serve King and Country and as Betty dried her tears she could never have guessed that her beloved pet was destined to become a D-Day hero.
